The Silent Crisis in 5G: CAPEX Is Done. OPEX Is Growing

Automation enables three critical monetization levers

The Silent Crisis in 5G: CAPEX Is Done. OPEX Is Growing

For many operators, the most painful part of 5G seemed to be behind us.

  • Spectrum acquired.
  • Sites upgraded.
  • Massive MIMO deployed.
  • Core virtualized.

CAPEX cycles were intense — but predictable. Now a different pressure is emerging. OPEX. And it’s growing quietly.

Energy consumption has increased due to denser networks and active antennas. Multi-band, multi-layer deployments add configuration and optimization complexity. Cloud-native cores introduce IT-style operational models many telcos were not culturally prepared for. Multi-vendor environments demand integration, validation, and continuous tuning. Individually, none of these look dramatic. Together, they erode margins.

This is the silent crisis of 5G. Because while revenue growth remains moderate, operational complexity continues to scale. What makes this more critical is that OPEX does not spike suddenly. It accumulates:

  • • Incremental increases in energy bills.
  • • Additional engineering hours for cross-domain troubleshooting.
  • • Longer validation cycles for software upgrades.
  • • More dependencies between RAN, transport, and cloud layers.

5G was architected for flexibility. But flexibility without operational maturity becomes fragility. The uncomfortable truth is this: Many operators modernized their network architecture But did not modernize their operational model at the same pace. And that gap is expensive. The solution is not simply cutting costs.

It is redesigning operations around automation, observability, and intent-based management. Operators who treat automation as optional will see OPEX continue to creep upward.

Operators who redesign processes around programmability will stabilize complexity before it scales out of control. The next competitive advantage in telecom will not come from more spectrum.

It will come from mastering operational efficiency in a software-defined network world. CAPEX built the network. OPEX will determine its profitability.
