Network slicing sounds simple: “Give this customer a dedicated slice with an SLA.” In real life, the SLA doesn’t fail when peak throughput is lower than a slide promised. It fails when the service can’t consistently Enter, Stay, or Behave as expected.

For beginners, here’s a practical way to think about slicing KPIs:

• * Step 1 is admission (Can the device get in?). • * Step 2 is service setup (Can it start the session?). • * Step 3 is continuity (Can it keep the promised QoS?).

That maps nicely into 3 KPIs that “make or break” a slice SLA:

• * Registration Success Rate measures whether devices can register on the network for that slice, because an SLA is worthless if endpoints can’t even attach reliably. • * PDU Session Establishment Success Rate measures whether the data session is actually created for the slice, because “connected” on the screen doesn’t always mean the service is usable. • * QoS Flow Retainability measures whether the promised QoS keeps working over time, because enterprise customers feel the pain as drops, stalling apps, robotic voice, or unstable control loops.
