MULTI-RAT AND INTERWORKING: THE REALITY OF HYBRID NETWORKS

We often talk about 5G as if it were a clean transition. New technology. New architecture. New capabilities. But in reality…

There is no such thing as a “pure” 5G network. What we actually operate are hybrid environments.

LTE, NR, legacy layers, different vendors, multiple bands… all working together. And that is where the real complexity lives.

Because performance is no longer defined by a single technology. It is defined by how well everything interoperates.

From my experience in RAN optimization, most issues are not caused by one RAT. They are caused by the interaction between them.

  • Interworking between LTE and NR introduces challenges in mobility, especially in EN-DC and handover scenarios.
  • Neighbor relations across RATs must be consistently aligned, or mobility KPIs quickly degrade.
  • Load balancing decisions become more complex when traffic needs to be distributed across different technologies with different capabilities.

And that’s just the beginning.

  • Different vendors implement features in slightly different ways, creating inconsistencies in behavior.
  • Legacy constraints still influence how new technologies can be deployed and optimized.
  • Parameter tuning in one layer can have unintended consequences in another.

This is the reality of hybrid networks. Not isolated optimization… But system-level coordination. With 5G Advanced, this complexity increases even further.

  • More layers, more bands, more use cases.
  • More dynamic behavior driven by automation and AI.
  • More dependency on end-to-end orchestration.

Which leads to a critical question: Are we designing networks for interoperability… Or just adding complexity on top of complexity?

Because success in modern RAN is not about optimizing NR in isolation. It is about understanding the full ecosystem. And ensuring everything works together. Seamlessly.

That is where real expertise makes the difference. What’s your experience? Are hybrid networks under control… or becoming harder to manage?
