Massive MIMO and the Illusion of Simplicity: Why SON Needs to Evolve

Massive MIMO is the powerhouse of 5G. It provides the capacity, coverage, and spectral efficiency that make 5G meaningful. But Massive MIMO also introduces a level of operational complexity that traditional SON (Self-Organizing Networks) was never designed to handle.

The “Illusion of Simplicity” in Massive MIMO comes from the idea that more antennas and smarter beamforming automatically lead to better performance. While the technology is brilliant, the optimization space is massive.

Here is why traditional SON struggles with Massive MIMO: • From Cells to Beams: Optimization is no longer about cell-level parameters. It is about beam management, tilt optimization, and spatial multiplexing in a 3D environment. • Dynamic Traffic Steering: Users move, traffic shifts, and interference patterns change in milliseconds. Static or slow-reacting SON loops cannot keep up with beam-level dynamics. • Multi-Vendor Complexity: Different vendors implement Massive MIMO differently. Unifying optimization logic across a multi-vendor network requires a level of abstraction that traditional SON lacks. • Energy vs. Performance: Managing the power consumption of Massive MIMO units while maintaining high capacity is a delicate balance that requires deep, real-time awareness.

This is where the evolution toward O-RAN and SMO-driven automation becomes critical. We need to move away from “black box” optimization and toward open, programmable, and data-driven apps (rApps/xApps) that can ingest high-resolution data and act at the right scale.

Massive MIMO is too dynamic for manual tuning and too complex for rigid automation. The future of 5G performance depends on our ability to build SON that is as sophisticated as the antennas it manages.
