KPIs, QoS and User Experience Are Actually Connected
Explores how AI, SMO, and intelligent automation are enabling energy-aware RAN optimization by dynamically balancing network performance and power consumption.
KPIs, QoS and User Experience Are Actually Connected
“Your network can hit every KPI target and still lose customers.”
After more than two decades working in RAN Design, Optimization, SON and now Network Automation, I’ve seen this scenario more times than I can count. Engineering teams celebrate because Accessibility improved. Management is happy because Throughput increased. Dashboards are full of green indicators. Yet customer complaints continue. Why?
Because KPIs, QoS and User Experience are not the same thing.
This is the first post of a series where we’ll explore how engineering decisions ultimately impact business outcomes.
Let’s start with the fundamentals:
- KPIs tell us how the network is performing from an engineering perspective.
- QoS indicates how effectively the network delivers a specific service under defined conditions.
- User Experience reflects how customers actually perceive the service they receive.
The challenge is that many organizations optimize these layers independently.
A network may achieve excellent RSRP, SINR, Accessibility and Retainability values, yet users may still experience frustration due to congestion during peak hours, inconsistent performance across locations, or application-specific issues.
The reality is simple:
- KPIs measure the network.
- QoS measures the service.
- Experience measures the customer.
And customers don’t see our dashboards.
They only remember whether the video froze, the call dropped, or the application responded slowly. This is why modern network optimization must evolve beyond simply chasing technical targets. The real objective is not achieving a green KPI dashboard. The real objective is creating a network that consistently delivers value to the people and businesses that depend on it. As telecom networks become increasingly automated through SON, SMO, rApps and AI-driven optimization, this distinction becomes even more important.
We should not ask: “Did we improve the KPI?” We should ask: “Did we improve the customer experience?”
