The Future Of Optimization Is Context, Not KPIs
Discover why the future of RAN optimization depends less on collecting more KPIs and more on understanding the operational context behind every metric.
The Future Of Optimization Is Context, Not KPIs
For years, RAN optimization has been driven by KPIs.
- Accessibility.
- Retainability.
- Mobility.
- Throughput.
- PRB utilization.
These metrics have helped us measure network performance and identify opportunities for improvement. But I believe the next evolution of network optimization won’t come from collecting more KPIs. It will come from understanding the context behind them. Take a simple example. Imagine two cells with exactly the same PRB utilization. One is located in a business district during office hours. The other serves a stadium just before a major event. The KPI is identical. The operational context is completely different. Should both cells receive the same optimization action? Probably not. The same applies to throughput. A temporary reduction during peak hours may be expected in one market. The same value in another location could indicate a serious performance issue. Without context, KPIs describe what is happening. They rarely explain why.
Throughout my career, I’ve learned that the best optimization decisions never come from looking at a single dashboard. They come from correlating multiple sources of information.
- Traffic behavior.
- Mobility patterns.
- User distribution.
- Historical trends.
- Special events.
- Business priorities.
Only then does the data begin to tell a meaningful story. This is where I believe AI and Network Automation will have their greatest impact. Not because they can process more KPIs. But because they can combine operational context with engineering knowledge to recommend smarter decisions. That’s also why the role of the RAN engineer is evolving. In the past, much of our time was spent collecting and analyzing data.
Tomorrow, our greatest value will come from defining the context that allows automation to make better decisions. Because context is something that isn’t always visible in a KPI. It comes from understanding how networks behave, how customers use them, and what the operator is trying to achieve. To me, that’s the next frontier of optimization. Not replacing KPIs. But giving them meaning. Because a KPI without context is just a number. Context is what turns that number into an engineering decision.
** Do you think future optimization platforms should prioritize KPI thresholds, or should they focus on understanding the operational context behind every decision?**
