Is AI-RAN Really Able To Replace RF Engineers?

“AI can recommend an optimization. But can it truly understand why it’s the right one?”

As AI-RAN becomes one of the hottest topics in our industry, I’ve noticed two very different narratives. One says AI will transform network operations. The other claims RF engineers will eventually become obsolete. I believe the reality lies somewhere in between.

After working in RF Design, Network Optimization, SON, R&D, and now Network Automation, I’ve seen how every major technological shift changes the role of engineers. Automation doesn’t eliminate expertise. It changes where that expertise creates value. AI is already remarkably good at tasks such as:

  • Processing millions of performance counters in seconds.
  • Detecting hidden patterns across large datasets.
  • Identifying optimization opportunities that humans might overlook.
  • Recommending actions based on historical behavior and predictive models.

These capabilities are transforming the way we operate mobile networks. But there is another side of the equation.

  • AI doesn’t attend design review meetings.
  • AI doesn’t negotiate trade-offs between conflicting business priorities.
  • AI doesn’t understand why an operator may intentionally accept a KPI degradation to achieve a broader strategic objective.

And perhaps most importantly… AI doesn’t own the consequences of an engineering decision.

When an optimization recommendation affects millions of subscribers, someone still needs to validate whether it makes technical and operational sense. That responsibility belongs to engineers.

I don’t believe the future is AI versus RF engineers. I believe it’s AI empowering RF engineers to solve more complex problems while spending less time on repetitive analysis. The engineers who will thrive won’t be those competing against AI. They’ll be those who know how to combine engineering judgment with intelligent automation.

The question is no longer: “Will AI replace RF engineers?”

The better question is: “How should RF engineers evolve to create value in an AI-driven world?” In my opinion, that’s where the real opportunity begins.
